In enterprise application development, software complexity often ends up slowing down teams. Adding a feature becomes risky, and even a small change to a database schema can break business logic. Clean Architecture, popularized by Robert C. Martin (“Uncle Bob”), tackles this problem by enforcing a strict separation of responsibilities.

The Limits of the Classic MVC Model

In a traditional MVC setup, controllers and models often end up carrying too much logic. The model becomes a data access container tied to a specific ORM, while the controller juggles HTTP requests, authentication, and business rules. The result:

A strong coupling with the framework and infrastructure tools.
A major difficulty in writing unit tests without mocking the entire database.
A direct dependency between the business logic and third-party technical changes.

The 4 Circles of Clean Architecture

Clean Architecture organizes code into concentric layers. The golden rule is the dependency rule: source code dependencies should only point inward, towards the higher-level layers (the business logic).

1. Entities (Business Rules of the Company)

Entities encapsulate critical business rules that are independent of the application. They are pure structures, free from any ORM decorators or external dependencies.

2. Use Cases (Application Rules)

This layer orchestrates the flow of data to and from the entities. It performs a specific action dictated by the user (e.g., CreateUserUseCase, ValidateCartUseCase).

3. Interface Adapters (Presenters, Controllers, Gateways)

These components convert data from the format required by the Use Cases to the format required by external interfaces (HTTP, SQL, graphical interfaces).

4. Frameworks & Drivers (Infrastructure)

This is the outermost layer, bringing together the database engine (PostgreSQL, MongoDB), web frameworks (Express, NestJS, FastAPI), and third-party services (Stripe, SendGrid).

Dependency Inversion in Action

For a Use Case to interact with a database without depending on it directly, we apply dependency inversion through Ports (interfaces) and Adapters (implementations).

// 1. Domain / Use Case: Port Definition (Interface)
export interface UserRepository {
findById(id: string): Promise<User | null>;
save(user: User): Promise<void>;
}

// 2. Use Case: Business Orchestration
export class ActivateUserUseCase {
  constructor(private readonly userRepository: UserRepository) {}

  async execute(userId: string): Promise {
const user = await this.userRepository.findById(userId);
if (!user) throw new Error("User not found");
   user.activate(); // Logic encapsulated in the entity
await this.userRepository.save(user);
}

When to adopt it?

Clean Architecture shines in complex business applications, long-lived platforms, and projects involving distributed teams. For a simple prototype (a few-week MVP) or a basic CRUD, it can introduce an unnecessary file overhead.
